Class of 2027 or 2028 and not signed yet? Email coaches before the signing periods
Coaches build their lists before signing week. If a program has not seen your film by early November, email it now, not after November 11.
- Class of 2027: email the programs that fit you this week. Send current film, measurables, GPA, and your season schedule. Most Division I sports are in a dead period November 9-12, 2026, so coaches cannot see you in person that week, but they can still read email and call you.
- Baseball and softball: Division I baseball has a recruiting shutdown November 24-29 and softball November 25-29, 2026. In a shutdown, coaches cannot call, text, or email recruits at all, so get your email in before November 24.
- Football: FBS coaches cannot recruit in person from November 30 through December 31, 2026, the stretch that covers the early period. In December, email and phone are how a new name reaches them.
- Class of 2028: you sign in the 2027-28 signing periods, which the NCAA has not posted yet. Junior year is when coaches build your class's list, so the emails you send this winter are how they first hear your name.
- Follow up. In NextCommit's 2026 coach email study, threads with a follow-up got more replies than one-off emails. Send a second email after 7 to 10 days with something new: a stat, a game result, or a new clip.

The free coach email generator writes a first email from your sport, grad year, measurables, and film link. Use it for the programs still building their 2027 and 2028 lists.
When is signing day for basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer?
Outside football, the NCAA sets the first day you can sign and each school sets the last.
In football, December has become the real signing day. Programs expect committed recruits to sign early, and coaches can read a recruit who waits until February as a flight risk. If you are committed and the offer is in writing, December is the normal path.
- Basketball (Division I): the early period runs November 11 to 18, 2026, and the regular period opens April 14, 2027.
- Baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, track and field, cross country, and every other Division I and II sport: sign any day from November 11, 2026. There is no NCAA closing date.
- Football (Division I): the early period runs December 2 to 4, 2026, and National Signing Day is February 3, 2027.
- Football (Division II): high school recruits sign from February 3, 2027, and midyear junior college transfers from December 2, 2026.
- Division III: schools do not offer athletics scholarships, so the NCAA signing dates do not apply.
- NAIA and junior colleges: they set their own rules, separate from the NCAA dates. Ask each program what it needs you to sign and by when.
- Women's flag football: most college programs are NAIA, Division II, Division III, or junior college. The NAIA made flag football a championship sport starting in 2026-27, with its first national championship in spring 2027, so NAIA flag programs sign on NAIA rules.
Can coaches contact you during signing week?
Yes, by phone and email in most sports. In-person recruiting stops in most Division I sports from Monday, November 9 through Thursday, November 12, 2026.
- Division I baseball, softball, men's basketball, soccer, women's volleyball, cross country and track and field, swimming and diving, and wrestling: dead period November 9-12, 2026. No in-person contact or campus visits.
- Division I women's basketball: evaluation period from October 1, 2026 to February 28, 2027, except a dead period December 24-26. Coaches can watch your games but cannot talk with you off campus.
- Division I football: FBS is in an evaluation period through November 29 and a dead period from November 30 to December 31, 2026. FCS is in a dead period November 30 to December 3, then a contact period from December 4.
- Division II: a signing-date dead period runs from 7 a.m. November 9 to 7 a.m. November 11, 2026 for every sport except football. Division II football has one from 7 a.m. February 1 to 7 a.m. February 3, 2027.
- On the day you sign, no NCAA coach can have in-person contact with you, on or off campus.

What do recruits sign now that the NLI is gone?
Division I and II recruits now sign an athletics aid agreement: the school agrees to provide athletics aid if you are admitted, stay eligible, and meet the agreement's terms. Many programs pair it with a roster or participation agreement under the House Settlement roster caps, and some add NIL paperwork through their revenue-sharing framework.
Signing ends your recruitment. Coaches from other NCAA schools that offer athletics scholarships must stop recruiting you and your family, you cannot sign with a second school unless the first one releases you, and no college coach can attend your signing celebration in person.
Read the renewal language first. Most college scholarships are one-year renewable awards, and the difference between "renewed automatically absent misconduct" and "renewed at the program's discretion" matters enormously. Then confirm your spot against the roster cap in writing, because under the 105-man FBS limit and equivalent caps in other sports, a promised walk-on spot is a softer commitment than it sounds.
What should unsigned seniors do after National Signing Day?
If February 3 passes without a signature, run this sequence instead of waiting for a call that is not coming.
- Re-run your division fit honestly. If D1 offers did not come by winter, your film and measurables are telling you which levels to target.
- Widen the list to 30 to 50 D2, D3, NAIA, and JUCO programs where your numbers match their current roster.
- Send updated outreach with senior film, current measurables, GPA, and your spring schedule.
- Answer fast. Late-cycle recruiting moves in days, not months, because coaches are filling specific holes.
- Consider the JUCO path deliberately. Two strong JUCO years with documented development is a proven route to four-year offers.

FAQ
Questions athletes and parents ask
When is National Signing Day for the Class of 2027?
National Signing Day is Wednesday, February 3, 2027, when the Division I and II football regular signing period opens. Most FBS and FCS recruits sign earlier, in the Division I early period from Wednesday, December 2 through Friday, December 4, 2026. Every other Division I and II sport can sign from Wednesday, November 11, 2026. These are the 2026-27 dates on the NCAA recruiting page.
When is National Signing Day 2026?
It depends on your class. For the Class of 2027, the 2026 signing dates are November 11, 2026 for every Division I and II sport except football, and December 2-4, 2026 for the Division I football early period. The February 4, 2026 signing day was for the Class of 2026.
When is the 2026 early signing period for football?
December 2 to 4, 2026, Wednesday through Friday. Division I and II programs can also sign midyear two-year college transfers starting December 2. The FBS recruiting calendar is in a dead period from November 30 through December 31, 2026, so FBS coaches do not recruit in person while classes sign. The FCS calendar has a shorter dead period, November 30 to December 3, and a contact period from December 4.
When is signing day for basketball, baseball, softball, and soccer in 2026?
Wednesday, November 11, 2026 is the first day Division I and II recruits outside football can sign. Division I basketball's early period runs November 11 to 18, and its regular period opens April 14, 2027. Baseball, softball, soccer, volleyball, and the other sports have no NCAA closing date: each school's scholarship policy sets the last day.
I am in the Class of 2027 or 2028 and not signed. What should I do before the signing periods?
Email coaches now, before signing week. Most Division I sports are in a dead period November 9-12, 2026, so coaches cannot see you in person that week, but they can still read your email and call you. Send current film, measurables, GPA, and your schedule to 30 to 50 programs that fit, then follow up with something new. Class of 2028 juniors sign in the 2027-28 signing periods, which the NCAA has not posted yet, so this winter is when coaches first hear your name.
What happened to the National Letter of Intent?
The NCAA Division I Council voted in October 2024 to end the National Letter of Intent program. Division I and II recruits now sign an athletics aid agreement, a written offer of athletics aid issued by the school. Once you sign, coaches from other NCAA schools that offer athletics scholarships must stop recruiting you, and you cannot sign with a second school unless the first one releases you.
What happens if I am not signed by National Signing Day?
Nothing closes. February 3 is a milestone for football, not a deadline for your career. Outside the football and basketball early windows, the NCAA sets only a start date, so Division II and many Division I programs keep signing through spring, and Division III, NAIA, and junior college programs add athletes into the summer. Unsigned seniors should widen their target list to those levels right away and send updated film.
Can a college coach attend my signing day?
No. NCAA rules bar coaches from in-person contact with you, on or off campus, on the day you sign an athletics aid agreement, so a coach cannot attend your signing celebration.
Is a verbal commitment binding?
No. A verbal commitment is not binding for you or the school. Under the House Settlement roster caps, programs have more pressure to reshape rosters late, which means verbal commitments carry more risk than they used to. Keep running your process until you have signed an athletics aid agreement.
What should I check before I sign?
Confirm four things in writing: your scholarship or aid amount and its renewal terms, your roster status under the program's roster cap, your academic eligibility through the NCAA Eligibility Center, and what happens to your aid if a coaching change occurs. Ask the compliance office, not just the recruiting coach, for anything unclear.
